Keyboard

Playing Keyboard is different from playing "piano". There is a piano sound on the keyboard that is very realistic, but there is also a pad, and volume knobs, not to mention the sustain pedal. Use of these are also very important to master in playing keyboard.

Playing keyboard in the band at OBC is based on knowing how to translate chords into playing the instrument. Unlike classical piano, it is not essential for the piano to play the tune, and if there is music, that music needs to be a guide. It is also important to be able to interpret the rhythm and the feel of the music into the keyboard.

A good grasp on playing chords in the right hand and bass notes with 5ths in the left hand is really useful! Knowing your inversions of chords will help keep your hands in the "sweet spot" of the instrument (right hand being mainly in the middle) rather than jumping up and down the keyboard as the chord changes. So, C to G your hand will move from C 3rd inversion to G 1st.
